High-altitude former capital of the Inca Empire. Cobblestone streets, colonial churches built on Inca foundations, and the essential base for Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and the Inca Trail.

Getting There

Airport: Alejandro Velasco Astete (CUZ). Most travelers fly from Lima (1 hour). Acclimatize for a day or two before heavy activity.

• San Blas — Artsy hillside neighborhood
• Sacred Valley (Urubamba / Ollantaytambo) — Lower altitude, closer to Machu Picchu trains
